A Utah federal judge on Thursday held that three Utah residents born in American Samoa, a U.S. territory, are birthright American citizens, striking down a statute that gave them a lesser status as unconstitutional.

The federal government is violating the U.S. Constitution by failing to recognize that the 14th Amendment should bestow citizenship by birthright to natives of American Samoa, several natives of the U.S. territory asserted Tuesday in Utah federal court.
