A Massachusetts federal judge on Thursday rejected a Lexington man's contention that his conviction for trading VistaPrint options off of nonpublic information resulted from an inconsistent jury verdict, but said the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's request he pay $1.8 million in civil penalties for the insider trading was too much.

A Massachusetts federal jury sided with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and found that a suburban Boston man who made more than $800,000 trading stock in the marketing company Vistaprint did so using inside information he got from either a close friend who worked with the company or her husband.

A suburban Boston man used inside information from a close friend working with Massachusetts-based Vistaprint to reel in nearly $1 million in illegal gains by hitting on risky insider trading bets, according to a complaint filed Thursday in federal court by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and a parallel federal indictment.
