A federal receiver appointed in the wake of a massive timber industry scam in Mississippi is seeking more than $3 million in fees after reaching a multimillion-dollar settlement with Butler Snow LLP, which the receiver had accused of furthering the fraud.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday unsealed a suit alleging the president of a purported timber company in Mississippi bilked at least 150 investors in an $85 million Ponzi scheme, on the same day federal prosecutors announced parallel criminal charges.
