An atheist group whose tax-exempt status was revoked cannot proceed with its suit claiming the Internal Revenue Service grants religious organizations preferential treatment by exempting them from detailed financial reporting requirements, a District of Columbia federal court has ruled.

The Internal Revenue Service discriminated against an atheist charitable organization by making it file information returns in order to retain its nonprofit status while religious organizations are not required to do so, the group said in a complaint filed Thursday in a District of Columbia federal court.
