A federal judge in Chicago has ruled that General Motors's longtime legal rival there has failed to convince him that engineers working for the automaker showed "deceptive intent" when filing a design patent at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office using the wrong name.

An Illinois federal judge has denied automobile replacement part maker LKQ Corp.'s request for default judgment and sanctions against General Motors Co., because the manufacturer didn't show GM acted in bad faith when it could not find the evidence the court had ordered it to share in LKQ's lawsuit alleging General Motors wrongly accused it of patent infringement.

General Motors Co. has improperly accused an automobile replacement parts maker of infringing several design patents, including two that are under a licensing agreement with the parts maker, an Illinois federal lawsuit claimed Wednesday.
