A Texas federal judge ordered a Norwegian mining company to pay $2.4 million, on top of a $2 million jury verdict, covering oil drilling device sales made after they were found to infringe a rival's intellectual property.

A Western District of Texas jury has found that a Norwegian drill equipment manufacturer indirectly infringed claims of a rival's patent covering a type of "buoyancy system" used in oil wells, and so it must pay almost $2 million.

The Federal Circuit on Tuesday backed U.S. District Judge Alan D. Albright's decision not to transfer a patent lawsuit over oil drilling technology from the Western District of Texas to the Southern District, unmoved by arguments that South Texas was the "overwhelmingly more convenient forum."
