The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission told a New York federal court Tuesday that mining giant Vale SA has agreed to pay $55.9 million to settle a lawsuit alleging that it failed to alert investors about safety issues ahead of a deadly collapse at one of its Brazilian mines.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission claimed Thursday that Brazilian mining giant Vale SA knew its Brumadinho dam was unsafe before it collapsed and killed 270 people, but instead made false disclosures to dupe authorities and investors into thinking it was.
