The holder of a patent on a device that prevents New York City subways from flooding on Thursday settled a case adjacent to a $17.8 million infringement feud by agreeing to accept $850,000 from an individual and two companies accused of helping siphon money away from the infringers.

A federal judge on Tuesday allowed a plaintiff in an underlying patent case to take a fifth bite at seeking part of a $17 million stipulated judgment for willful infringement, but he expressed concerns about whether the statute of limitations and out-of-state defendants would ultimately leave the dispute out of his reach.
