An Idaho federal judge said Tuesday "the time has finally come" for Longhorn IP and its Katana Silicon Technologies unit to pay an $8 million bond imposed three years ago under a state law against "patent trolls" after they alleged Micron Technology made memory devices that infringe their semiconductor patents.

An Idaho federal judge has imposed an $8 million bond on patent owner Longhorn IP LLC after it alleged memory devices made by Micron Technology Inc. infringe its various semiconductor patents, finding that Micron has supported its bad faith infringement claims enough to trigger a bond provision in a state law against "patent trolls."

Idaho's attorney general told a federal court on Tuesday that his office would be moving to defend the constitutionality of a largely untested law passed in Boise to let companies use federal courts in the state to punish so-called patent trolls.
