Kia America Inc. is asking a New York federal court to throw out claims from two mothers over the deaths of their teenage children in a car crash involving a stolen 2021 Sportage, saying the thief's reckless driving and a TikTok challenge are at fault for the accident.

Kia has convinced the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation that a suit brought by the mothers of two teens who died while passengers in a stolen Kia Sportage doesn't belong in the consolidated action that accuses the automaker of making its vehicles too easy to steal.
