Johnson & Johnson and Vogue International are making a "drastic" bid to throw out a class action alleging their dry shampoo contains the carcinogen benzene, an Illinois woman said, arguing the companies are trying to prevent class certification before she's had a chance to flesh out her claims.

Vogue and Johnson & Johnson urged an Illinois federal court to toss a proposed class action that accuses the companies of selling dry shampoo with an overabundance of benzene, a known carcinogen, saying the laboratory tests cited in the suit showed both normal and abnormal levels of the chemical in the product.

An Illinois woman hit Johnson & Johnson and cosmetics company Wella with two separate federal class action lawsuits Thursday, alleging they sold dry shampoo products containing a known carcinogen, benzene, and failed to disclose the presence of it in their labeling.
