A Chicago-based renovations company will pay $400,000 in penalties, implement a comprehensive protocol to ensure its contractors are trained and certified, and perform $2 million in abatement work on lower-income properties to resolve accusations that it violated U.S. Environmental Protection Agency rules on lead-safe work practices, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced.

The U.S. Department of Justice and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reached a roughly $2.4 million settlement with a Chicago-area remodeling firm on Monday for allegedly skirting federal safe lead work regulations at more than 200 projects, the agencies said.
