New Jersey on Monday defended the constitutionality of its law prohibiting the private operation of immigrant detention centers, arguing there is no federal law that gives private companies the right to operate a detention center and that it does not regulate or discriminate against the federal government.

Private prison giant CoreCivic Inc. sued New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and the state's attorney general over a law prohibiting detention agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying the law will cost it $18 million a year in revenue.
