A Puerto Rico federal court signed off Thursday on a Superfund deal that would see HP and a silversmith company undertake remediation at a site that contaminated a town's source of drinking water and pay $7.7 million for the cleanup.

The federal government has asked a Puerto Rico federal court to approve a settlement under which HP Inc. and Wallace Silversmiths de Puerto Rico would pay up to $7.3 million to cover the costs of cleaning up soil contamination stemming from computer parts dumping.

HP is among several manufacturers liable for cleanup costs at a Puerto Rican Superfund site where computer parts were dumped, causing contamination of nearby groundwater, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
