Debevoise Notches Transgender Rights Win In DMV Fight

By Lisa Ryan (July 17, 2015, 7:29 PM EDT) -- Transgender individuals in West Virginia are now allowed to be photographed as they regularly appear in their driver's license photos, thanks to a pro bono team of Debevoise & Plimpton LLP attorneys and the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund.

The West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles on July 1 agreed to change its 2003 policy that prohibited individuals from misrepresenting their gender in driver's license photographs. After learning that the policy discriminated against transgender drivers in the state, Debevoise threatened to file suit and was able to convince the state to change its tune, the firm said.
