Cisco scored a partial win in its patent battle with Centripetal Networks when the Patent Trial and Appeal Board struck down a large portion of a cybersecurity threat detection patent for being obvious in light of a Cisco user manual.

A Patent Trial and Appeal Board panel put an attorney for Centripetal Networks Inc. in the hot seat Thursday, pressing him repeatedly to explain why he thinks a Cisco Systems Inc. user manual doesn't render Centripetal's cyberthreat detection patent invalid as obvious.
