TTAB Says Misspelled 'White Sangriiia' Can't Be Registered

Law360 (February 28, 2018, 5:10 PM EST) -- The Trademark Trial and Appeal Board has ruled that a Puerto Rican spirits company couldn’t register the misspelled “White Sangriiia” as a trademark, saying it was still “merely descriptive” of the same-named wine drink.

Pan American Properties Corp. wanted to register the name — one flavor of its Gasolina drink pouches — as a trademark for “prepared alcoholic cocktail,” but the board said Monday it would be “readily perceived” by consumers as “an intentional misspelling or play on the word ‘sangria.’”
