Environmentalists Cry Foul Over EPA Mining Permits

Law360, New York (May 15, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The Obama administration is under fire after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency purportedly gave the go-ahead to the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers to approve up to 42 new permits for mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia.

Rep. Nick Rahall, D-W.Va., indicated in a press conference on Friday that the EPA had only expressed concern with six of the 48 mining permits presented, hoping to assuage his constituents' fears over coal mining permits.
