Belgacom To Appeal €66M Competition Fine

Law360, New York (May 27, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Belgian telecommunications colossus Belgacom has reportedly vowed to appeal a €66.3 million ($92.6 million) fine levied by the Belgian competition authority for abusing its dominant market position.

The Belgian Competition Council issued the fine after finding that in 2004 and 2005 the company's cell phone brand Proximus charged its end-users prices that were lower than the wholesale prices it charged competitors, according to a Reuters report.

Belgacom Chief Executive Didier Bellens responded to the fine in a news conference on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
