Senate Dems Grill Trump Nominee For 5th Circ. Seat

Law360, Washington (April 25, 2018, 7:49 PM EDT) -- Democrats on the Senate's Judiciary Committee on Wednesday grilled Texas Gov. Greg Abbott's general counsel Andrew S. Oldham, nominee to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, over his record defending the state.

The questioning, which touched on Oldham's time at the governor's office as well as at the solicitor general's office, focused on his advocacy against federal government decisions, such as in cases like Shelby County v. Holder at the U.S. Supreme Court. In that case, Oldham argued on behalf of states that ultimately convinced the justices that judicial preclearance of electoral changes under the Voting Rights Act was unconstitutional.
