Shutts Wins Arbitration Bid In Race Bias Case

Law360 (June 5, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Shutts & Bowen LLP has won its motion to compel arbitration of a former secretary's racial discrimination allegations against the firm.

Judge Richard Lazzara of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida ruled in favor of the firm on Friday, staying plaintiff Maritza Ravelo's Title VII lawsuit.

The judge said Ravelo's argument that the binding arbitration clause in her employment agreement was unconscionable must be decided by an arbitrator.
