Sens. Call For Fair Wages For Home-Care Workers

Law360, New York (June 15, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Fifteen Democratic U.S. senators have called on Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to work with Congress to close loopholes in the Fair Labor Standards Act exempting home-care health and companionship employees from federal wage-and-hour standards.

Led by Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, the legislators argued in a letter sent to Solis on Thursday that the skyrocketing demand for at-home health care, coupled with an industrywide average wage of $9 an hour, had created a shortage of qualified home-care employees, threatening the industry's ability to meet growing demand...
