Senate Panel Approves Broad Energy Bill

Law360, New York (June 16, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A U.S. Senate panel passed an energy bill Wednesday that would create a renewable electricity standard of 15 percent, increase domestic production of offshore oil and gas, improve energy efficiency in buildings, and promote new green technologies, among other ambitions.

The legislation, known as the American Clean Energy Leadership Act, cleared the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee by a 15-8 vote. It is expected to eventually be combined with a climate bill, though no companion to Waxman-Markey has yet been introduced in the Senate....
