EU Proposes More Centralized Merger Review

Law360, New York (June 18, 2009, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The European Commission has called for broader authority to review mergers, saying that the current division of merger review power between the commission and European Union member states, while effective overall, doesn't always catch anti-competitive deals.

The commission released a report Thursday on the effectiveness of its 2004 merger regulation, finding that the rule has been largely successful, but identifying several areas that could be improved by giving the commission sole jurisdiction over a wider range of merger procedures.
