FERC Powers Forward With Smart Grid Policy

Law360, New York (July 16, 2009, 4:49 PM EDT) -- The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission adopted a policy statement Thursday that the agency says will accelerate the development of a smart grid for the nation's electrical transmission system.

The policy statement, which closely tracks a proposal issued in March, focuses on ensuring the cybersecurity of the grid; providing two-way communications among regional market operators, utilities, service providers and consumers; ensuring that bulk power systems have equipment that allows them to operate reliably; and coordinating the integration into the power system of emerging technologies such as renewable...
