EU Set To Back Lufthansa-Austrian Airlines Merger

Law360, New York (July 31, 2009, 4:49 PM EDT) -- The European Commission has decided to sign off on German airline Deutsche Lufthansa AG's merger with Austrian Airlines AG, following Lufthansa's promise to take additional steps to allay competition concerns raised by European Union regulators.

EU Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said Friday that she had ordered the drafting of a conditional clearance decision, to be submitted to the advisory committee of the EU member states.

A final proposal will be presented to the College of Commissioners as soon as possible, Kroes said.
