FDA Urges Melamine Testing On Drug Products

Law360, New York (August 6, 2009, 5:15 PM EDT) -- Some ingredients used to make or prepare drug products need to be tested for the synthetic chemical melamine, which can cause kidney failure and death, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned Thursday.

The agency said it had no reason to believe that the U.S. pharmaceutical supply was contaminated with melamine. However, it said, recent events involving pet and livestock food products in the U.S. and milk products for infants in China underscore the potential problem.
