Congress Should Make FDA Effective: Report

Law360, New York (October 10, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Congress should better regulate and should give more money to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration so it can make drugs safer for consumers, according to a report published Monday.

The article, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, said that the FDA’s initial pre-approval studies let adverse events go undetected, that manufacturers do not fulfill the majority of their post-marketing safety study commitments, and that the FDA lacks authority to pursue companies that violate regulations.
