Coal Companies Unite In $2B All-Stock Merger

Law360, New York (August 7, 2009, 1:38 PM EDT) -- Alpha Natural Resources Inc. and Foundation Coal Holdings Inc. completed a $2 billion all-stock merger at the end of July, forming a company that bills itself as the third-largest coal producer in the U.S.

The new company, which held on to the name Alpha Natural Resources, operates more than 60 coal mines and 14 preparation plants, controls reserves of more than 2.3 billion tons of coal, employs about 6,200 people, and had pro forma 2008 revenues of $4.2 billion.
