Senate Confirms Kappos As USPTO Chief

Law360, New York (August 7, 2009, 4:42 PM EDT) -- The Senate has confirmed David Kappos as the next head of the embattled U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, throwing an IBM Corp. veteran into the role of remaking an agency struggling under the weight of a massive backlog of patent applications.

Moving quickly on Friday ahead of an impending summer recess, the Senate voted to approve Kappos as director of the USPTO barely a day after the Senate Judiciary Committee had advanced the nomination.
