Mass. Greenlights 1st Major Solar Power Project

Law360, New York (August 13, 2009, 12:02 PM EDT) -- Western Massachusetts Electric Co. has received the go-ahead to begin development on New England's first large-scale utility-owned and -operated solar energy installation, winning approval under Massachusetts' Green Communities Act of 2008.

Following months of negotiations over cost controls and development transparency between Massachusetts' attorney general and WMECO, the state Department of Public Utilities on Wednesday signed off on the utility's plan to construct and deploy up to 6 megawatts of solar photovoltaic power—enough to power 6,000 homes, the company said — throughout western Massachusetts.
