Appeals Court Upholds Validity Of Guidant Patent

Law360 (October 12, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a letdown for device manufacturer Medtronic Inc., a U.S. appeals court upheld an earlier district court decision that backed rival Guidant Corp.’s defibrillator patent.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed Thursday with the lower court that the claims on Guidant’s patent covering an implantable defibrillator are valid.

Guidant, a unit of Boston Scientific Corp., holds the exclusive license for patents from Mirowski Family Ventures LLC, which owns the rights of inventor Dr. Michael Mirowski’s defibrillator patents.
