Vt. Court Says State Law Applies To Umbrella Policies

Law360, New York (August 25, 2009, 6:10 PM EDT) -- Vermont's uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage law applies to umbrella policies, its high court has ruled, paving the way for a deceased police sergeant's estate to tap into the state's excess liability policies.

The Vermont Supreme Court ruled in a 4-1 decision Friday that the state's uninsured or underinsured motorist statute requires excess liability policies, also called umbrella policies, to cover uninsured or underinsured motorists.
