Hewlett-Packard Sues Gateway Over eMachines Licensing Pact

Law360 (March 26, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Hewlett-Packard has filed a lawsuit against rival Gateway in a licensing dispute over patents licensed by eMachines, which Gateway acquired in January for $266 million.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court on Wednesday in San Diego, is being spearheaded by Hewlett Packard Development Company, the intellectual property licensing organization that Hewlett-Packard established to capitalize on its growing patent portfolio.

Hewlett-Packard has not specified monetary damages, but it is seeking compensation for past patent infringements and a structure for compensation going forward.
