Raising The Stakes For Foreign Agent Registration

Law360, New York (September 14, 2009, 11:26 AM EDT) -- A recent electronic database is breathing new life into an obtuse and archaic statute born out of American fears of Nazi propaganda.

The Foreign Agents Registration Act (“FARA”) requires individuals and entities to register with the U.S. Department of Justice whenever they provide foreign principals with political, lobbying, public relations or other specified services.

A foreign principal can be a foreign government, company or individual, or a domestic entity that is directed, controlled or funded in whole or major part by a foreign entity.
