Bottled Water Standards Weaker Than For Tap: GAO

Law360, New York (August 27, 2009, 3:52 PM EDT) -- Safety and consumer protections are often less stringent for bottled water than for tap water, according to a report released Wednesday by the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

The report found that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s standards for bottled water for the most part mirror the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s drinking water requirements.

However, the FDA has yet to set a standard for DEHP, an organic compound widely used in the manufacture of polyvinyl chloride plastics, even though the EPA did so in 1992....
