EPA Aims To Limit Pollution From Oceangoing Ships

Law360, New York (August 28, 2009, 6:07 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing more stringent emission standards for new diesel engines on large oceangoing ships as the agency steps up its campaign to reduce air pollution from marine vessels.

The EPA is also aiming to ban the use of diesel fuel that contains more than 1,000 parts per million of sulfur in internal U.S. waters and within a proposed emission control area that would include much of the U.S. coastline.

The 155-page proposal was published Friday in the Federal Register.
