Microsoft To Create Open-Source Software

Law360, New York (October 17, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Hoping to solve the “interoperability” problem it has faced since being hit with a €497 million fine by European antitrust regulators, Microsoft Corp. announced Tuesday that it will start providing technology on an “open-source” basis.

Microsoft said that it would provide access to the “virtualization technology” without demanding payment or a license, giving developers more freedom.

Microsoft had already offered the technology for free, but developers had to sign a licensing agreement to use it.
