Sweeping Microsoft-Sun Pact Settles Long-Standing Patent Disputes

Law360, New York (April 2, 2004, 12:00 AM EST) -- Software giant Microsoft and archrival Sun Microsystems have signed a broad settlement agreement that includes the resolution of long-standing patent litigation, the two companies said in a surprise announcement Friday.

The two companies are settling and terminating their lawsuits in the U.S. in a deal that includes payments of $1.95 billion to Sun, the companies said. Moreover, Sun agreed not to continue to pursue its actions pending against Microsoft in the European Union.
