Cargill Wins $77M From Mexico Over NAFTA Violation

Law360, New York (September 21, 2009, 7:33 PM EDT) -- Food producer and agricultural firm Cargill Inc. has won a $77 million judgment against the Mexican government for imposing taxes and stringent import requirements for high fructose corn syrup in violation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.

The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes issued the award Friday, according to a statement from Mayer Brown LLP, which represented Cargill in the case. Public versions of the ruling have yet to be released, pending the redaction of confidential information, the firm said.
