German Regulators Reject $376M Merger Of Laser Firms

Law360, New York (October 26, 2006, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Opposing a decision by the U.S. Department of Justice, German competition regulators on Thursday rejected Coherent Inc.’s proposed $376 million acquisition of a rival U.S. scientific laser company.

The DOJ approved Coherent’s bid for Excel Technology Inc. in May, just four months after the merger was proposed. Due to Coherent’s revenue base in Germany, however, it was compelled to seek approval from the German Federal Cartel Office.
