Ohio Bank Sues Competitor Over Name

Law360, New York (October 31, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Two Ohio financial-services companies have decided to battle in court over the right to use the name FirstMerit amid claims customers are likely to be confused by similar monikers.

Ohio-based banking service FirstMerit Corp. filed suit against another Ohio company, Firstmerit Financial Group LLC, on Monday. The bank accused the lending company of trademark infringement, cyber piracy and violation of the Ohio Deceptive Trade Practices Act and called for injunctive relief.
