Law360, New York (December 10, 2009, 3:54 PM EST) -- Despite many uncertainties surrounding the U.S. carbon market, financial institutions have begun purchasing credits, investing in offset projects, participating in transactions and learning lessons about what strategies work best.

At this point, it remains unclear exactly what form a U.S. cap-and-trade program will take, or even if Congress will pass a bill in the near future. As a result, the carbon market in the United States is tiny compared to Europe, which has had its emissions trading scheme in effect since 2005.
