Aussie Regulator Pressures Mining Giants Over Deal

Law360, New York (November 12, 2009, 1:51 PM EST) -- Western Australia’s top official reportedly has warned Rio Tinto Ltd. and BHP Billiton Ltd. that he could block their proposed iron ore joint venture if they do not agree to pay higher royalties.

Western Australia Premier Colin Barnett told the chief executives of the mining giants at a Tuesday meeting that he sought to double their royalties so that they pay the same rate as other miners in the state, according to reports by an Australian newspaper.
