Consumer Group Seeks Ban Of Abbott's Meridia Drug

Law360, New York (December 3, 2009, 4:53 PM EST) -- A consumer group is asking the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ban Abbott Laboratories' weight-loss drug Meridia after a new study found that users who were obese, older than 55 years old and suffering from cardiovascular disease showed an increased number of heart attacks, strokes and deaths while taking the drug.

Public Citizen filed the complaint with the FDA on Thursday, about two weeks after the FDA said it was conducting an expedited safety review of the drug after receiving the study's results.
