Groups Ask 9th Circ. To Block Shell Offshore Drilling

Law360, New York (December 16, 2009, 3:09 PM EST) -- Conservation groups and an Eskimo whaling management organization have filed lawsuits challenging the approval of a proposal submitted by a Shell Oil Co. subsidiary to conduct offshore drilling in the Beaufort Sea, contending that plan could threaten sensitive wildlife habitats.

A coalition of environmental groups led by attorneys from Earthjustice, along with local tribal groups including the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission, filed suits on Tuesday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit against the Minerals Management Service, which is part of the U.S....
