Law360, New York (January 4, 2010, 5:46 PM EST) -- If passed, a potential amendment to Taiwan's Food Sanitation Act barring the importation of U.S. beef would constitute a unilateral abrogation of a bilateral agreement the two countries reached in October 2009, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The federal agencies released a statement Dec. 28 saying the proposed amendment's provisions do not have a basis in science or fact and will not protect Taiwan's food supply.
