Bucking Expectations, Insurance Suits Drop 9% In '09

Law360, New York (January 4, 2010, 6:14 PM EST) -- While attorneys say economic conditions have helped ignite insurance disagreements, the number of such disputes to enter federal courthouses actually dropped considerably in 2009, with new insurance case filings falling by about 9 percent compared with the previous year.

A Law360 analysis of federal case data shows that a total of 8,942 new insurance cases were filed in 2009, dipping 8.7 percent from the 9,796 lodged in 2008. At the same time, corporate lawsuits overall rose by about 5 percent, according to the Law360 analysis....
