E.U. Probes Thales, Alcatel Satellite Deal

Law360, New York (November 28, 2006, 12:00 AM EST) -- Fearing a monopoly on production of a key component of telecommunications satellites, the European Commission launched an investigation Tuesday into French defense-electronics corporation Thales SA’s deal with two satellite companies.

Thales plans to buy a 67% stake in France-based Alcatel Alenia Space, and a 33% stake in Telespazio of Italy, which would give Thales a monopoly in the production of traveling wave tubes.
