Law Firm Mergers Drop Off 24% In 2009

Law360, New York (January 6, 2010, 5:27 PM EST) -- Law firm mergers in the U.S. dropped about 24 percent in 2009 as firms hunkered down during the recession, but the market could soon see an uptick if firms' year-end financial results come in strong, according to a new report.

In a merger analysis released Wednesday, Altman Weil Inc. said there were 53 new law firm mergers and acquisitions reported in 2009, including 79 percent that involved the acquisition of a law firm with 20 or fewer attorneys.
